Pico laser treatments can also be used to remove unwanted tattoos from anywhere across the body. The technology’s high specification helps increase the speed at which the device shatters the tattoo pigments, meaning fewer treatments are required to achieve the desired result.

While Pico lasers can be effective, no laser tattoo removal can strip the skin of all coloured ink pigments. Black and grey ink is the easiest to remove, closely followed by dark green. Yellow, purple, and fluorescent hues are the most difficult to remove.

Each person and every tattoo are unique. Multiple laser treatments are usually required to remove a tattoo with an average of 5-10 treatments often needed. The number of sessions needed to remove a tattoo depends on many individual factors such as:
• Skin type: Skin types on the lower end of the Fitzpatrick scale typically have a greater success rate with tattoo removal.
• The depth of ink – Professional tattoos are deeper in the skin than amateur tattoos and will therefore require more laser treatments for removal.
• Type of ink – Inks used for tattoos are not regulated, so different types of inks affect the skin in different ways. Typically, amateur ink will respond at a faster rate than professional ink.
• Colour of ink – Certain colours are easier to remove than others. Black and grey ink is the easiest to remove, closely followed by dark green. Yellow, purple, and fluorescent hues are the most difficult to remove.
• Density of ink – The darker outlines of a tattoo take more sessions to remove while the shaded portion of a tattoo is easily removed. The more ink used per square inch in a tattoo the more sessions are required for removal.
• Age of tattoo – Older tattoos can be removed with fewer treatments than newer tattoos. This does not mean there will necessarily be different levels of success between new and older tattoos, simply the newer the tattoo the more likely more treatments may be necessary for removal.

How does laser tattoo removal work?
Laser tattoo removal works by targeting the ink particles in the skin with a high-intensity laser beam. The laser light passes through the skin and is absorbed by the ink particles. This causes the ink particles to heat up and break down into smaller fragments. These fragments are then removed by the body’s immune system over time.

Why laser for tattoo removal?
The primary benefit of laser tattoo removal is that it is a safe and effective way to remove unwanted tattoos. Other benefits include:

• Minimally invasive: Laser tattoo removal is a non-surgical, minimally invasive procedure.
• Minimal scarring: Laser tattoo removal can minimize scarring, especially compared to other tattoo removal methods.
• Customizable treatment: Laser tattoo removal can be customized to each patient’s individual needs.
• Quick recovery time: Recovery time is typically minimal, and patients can return to normal activities soon after treatment.

Do the Pico brand matter?
Just like mobile phones, not every PICO machine is born the same. At Sheen Clinic, we brought in the Discovery PICO series with the most advanced laser technology for the treatment of pigmented lesions, aged skin and tattoos. The laser energy skips the skin's outer layer, directly targeting to destroy the pigment without affecting the surrounding tissues. In other words, more precise, less downtime.

Discovery PICO has the highest peak power and shortest pulses among all PICO machines in the market. That being said, despite being able to target various concerns more effectively, only a trained professional with many years of experience can operate it.

Having operated lasers for over 10 years, Dr Doris Lee (LCP Certified) will set the perimeter based on patients’ skin conditions, combining her skills and techniques to maximize the advantages of Discovery PICO. Better results can be achieved with the correct operation of Discovery PICO.
